Musical Merits, is a system designed to recognize student commitment, participation, preparation, and positive contributions to our music program. Musical Merits will provide students and families with a clear and consistent way to understand eligibility for field trips, festivals, performances, and other special music events.
Students earn Musical Merits by actively participating in the music program, including attending rehearsals and performances, completing required part checks, being prepared, and demonstrating positive behavior and commitment to their ensemble.
Merits may be deducted for unsuccessful part checks, inappropriate behavior, or conduct referrals. Excused absences and individual circumstances will always be considered appropriately.
Students who are placed on academic or social suspension will temporarily have their available Merit total reduced to zero and will not be eligible to participate in trips or special events during the suspension.
Once the suspension is lifted, previously earned Merits will be restored.
Musical Merits are also designed to recognize students who make an ongoing commitment to our music ensembles.
Students who are enrolled in a music ensemble and meet the required Merit level will receive priority for trips and special events. Non-enrolled students may still have opportunities to participate when appropriate and when space is available; however, additional transportation will not be added solely to accommodate non-enrolled students.
Our goal is not simply to track points. Musical Merits are intended to recognize the qualities that help make our music program successful: commitment, preparation, attendance, responsibility, teamwork, and positive participation.
We hope this system gives students clear goals to work toward while providing families with a transparent and consistent understanding of expectations and opportunities within the Music Department.
